PROTOCOL

When you study in a university or work in an organization, you are subjected to certain dos and don'ts that you need to follow like Reaching on time, wearing formals and submitting assignments within the given deadline. The word protocol basically means a set of rules and guidelines that are needed to be followed by people.

It refers to an appropriate behaviour and rules of conduct for a particular situation or an event. So when you follow your office etiquettes, it means you are following the protocol. It could also mean a formal agreement between two parties. A protocol guides you how an activity should be performed especially in the field of diplomacy.

For example, a President of one country visiting another country is to be received by a person in a similar position and status in the host country. This is a kind of protocol and should not be violated. In the field of technology, a standard method for connecting computers for an exchange of data among them is also a protocol. As the word protocol is a kind of 'set of rules', it is a noun.

Example 1 : Lisa broke the company protocol, when she used the company's email address to send personal mails to her friends. 
Ex 2 : After the recent blast in the Shopping mall, the management ordered a protocol, to scan every entrant into the mall.
Ex 3 : In most of the restaurants, the correct safety protocol for employees handling food is to wear a hair net or a toque ( Chef's hat).
Ex 4 : The accident at the fuel station took place even though all the employees followed the safety protocol.
Ex 5 : switching off mobile phones in the hospital, is a protocol that is to be followed strictly by all the visitors.
Ex 6 : Air hostesses are especially trained in air safety protocol to enable them to handle emergency situations calmly and patiently.  
Ex 7 : Jeniffer's computer engineer said, " There was a problem with your computer's protocol settings and so you couldn't access the internet."
Ex 8 : Before paying the admission fees at the university, Sabina was asked to sign a declaration, that she had agreed to all the terms of the university's protocol.
Ex 9 : When Maria started her new company, she established her own protocols and trained the employees on them, to ensure smooth daily operations.
Ex 10 : Every Financial Institution has several security protocols in place to ensure that the clients sensitive data is protected. 
Ex 11 : Various countries have established a new trade protocol to help improve their respective economies and relations with one another.

A FEATHER IN YOUR CAP

When you are praised or appreciated for something great that you have achieved, it gives you a sense of pride and fulfilment. You feel satisfied with your achievement. The idiom a feather in your cap basically means to receive symbol of honour or achievement.Whenever you succeed in doing something or achieve a new milestone, it is definitely a feather in your cap.

A feather in a cap is a symbol of achievement and signifies a mark of distinction. When your efforts are acknowledged, you feel extremely proud and this adds to a feather in your cap. For example, When you win a marathon race, it is a feather in your cap as your achievement is worthy of praise and recognition.

Example 01 : When the wrestler won the Gold medal at the Olympics, he was thrilled as it was a feather in his cap.
Ex 02 : William's Masters degree, added a feather in his cap, as he had good chances to get a job, in an international company. 
Ex 03 : Being the first media channel to broadcast the earthquake on national television, it was a feather in their cap. The media channel added a feather in its cap, being the first to report from the ground zero of the earthquake hit area.
Ex 04 : Mother told Johnny, "I'm glad that you stood first in your math test. Your teacher praised you in front of the entire class, it is a feather in your cap."

PHOBIA

Do you fear something in your life ? and you don't know what is the cause of it? The word phobia basically means to have a fear of a particular object or situation. A phobia is a fear which can interfere with your ability to socialize, work or do your daily chores. When you have a phobia of something or a situation, you avoid facing them even after knowing they are not harmful or dangerous. A phobia can give you a panic attack or make you feel totally helpless.

There are many types of phobias that include fear of animal, heights, crowds and social events. Many times a bad experience which you can't get over develops a phobia. Many people have a phobia of water, they are extremely scared to swim or do any water based activities. This could be due a bad experience they have faced in their past. Most children fear darkness and are too afraid to sit in a dark room.

A person who has a phobia is known as phobic. For example, when a friend of yours has phobia of snakes, she begins to fear even on a discussion on snakes or by looking at a picture of a snake. As the word phobia is a kind of fear, it is a noun.

Example 01 : Dyslexic children should be given immediate help before they become school phobic.
Ex 02 : After a deadly bike accident over a wet road, I have become phobic to it, I never rode in monsoons after that and I feel I might skid even while walking on the road.
Ex 03 : Although William loves his girlfriend way too much, but hasn't proposed her for marriage as he has commitment phobia. 
Ex 04 : Lisa keeps washing her hands every hour, as she has a phobia of picking up germs from her surroundings.
Ex 05 : Due to Peter's flying phobia, he couldn't opt for a career in the aviation industry.
Ex 06 : Mary told Maria, " I have so many phobias, but my worst phobia is of spiders."
Ex 07 : Samantha has a phobia of elevators, She walks up twenty flights of stairs daily to get to her office.
Ex 08 : When the entire family took the cable car to reach the mountain top, John chose to stay away as he had a phobia of heights.
Ex 09 : Ben sleeps with the lights on, as he can't get over his phobia for darkness.
Ex 10 : When William was asked to give a speech in front of the audience, he stood nervous as he had a phobia of facing the crowd.

A BOLT FROM THE BLUE

In your daily routine, you may have faced something that left you feeling extremely surprised, as it was unexpected. The idiom a bolt from the blue basically means, to feel surprised due to something that you never expected. It means if something happens unexpectedly and suddenly, it is a bolt from the blue. If a lightning bolt were to strike a clear blue sky, it would be quite unexpected.

So something that occurs out of nowhere and is a complete surprise to you, it is a blue from the bolt. For example, when you heard the news of your friend's accident, it left you feeling shocked as it was something you never expected and happened all of a sudden. So this unpleasant news came as a bolt from the blue.

Example 01 : The news of John's heart attack, was a bolt from the blue to all his colleagues, as he was in his late thirties. 
Ex 02 : Peter's detention in his first year of medical college, came as a bolt from the blue to is parents, they were completely shattered. Peter's detention letter from the college principal, left his parents completely shattered, as it was bolt from the blue for his parents.
Ex 03 : When Mary and William broke the news of their divorce to both of their families, it was a like a bolt from the blue and left everyone heartbroken.
Ex 04 : After reading about the unreasonable rise in the petroleum price, it was like a bolt from the blue for the all the car owners and they decided to protest.
Ex 05 : The new tax policy came as a bolt from the blue to everyone as it left no scope for any savings.
Ex 06 : The young successful entrepreneur's suicide, was a bolt from the blue to all the neighbours, as they couldn't figure out the reason for her suicide.
Ex 07 : Ben got a bolt from the blue. When he was sacked from the company, after been awarded as the best salesman of the year.
Ex 08 : Jennifer had a bolt from the blue, when she realised that she had lost her diamond ring, she had no idea when it slipped off her finger.
Ex 9 : When the alcoholic decided to surrender himself to the rehabilitation centre, it came as a bolt from the blue to his wife as she had never expected him to take such a step. 
Ex 10 : When John was held to ransom at gun point, it came as a bolt from the blue as he didn't knew how to react. 
Ex 11 : When the board of directors saw their company's share value crashing down, it was like a bolt from the blue to them.
